Septoplasty for Excess Cartilage Removal:
While there are a lot of people who have gone through septoplasty already, there are those who are still contemplating about the idea. Most of these are still trying to look into the procedure so they could learn more about it before they finally decide to go under the knife. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to correct a deviated septum, the wall made of cartilage and bone that separates both sides of the nostrils.
People suffering from a deviated septum often have problems breathing because of this nasal obstruction and might also suffer from other problems like chronic sinusitis and nasal headaches. These problems can be addressed through the surgery because septoplasty removes the excess cartilage or bone that has cleaved into one side of the nasal cavities thus forming the obstruction.
Septoplasty Procedure:
You will be placed under a local or general anesthetic or a combination of a local anesthesia and intravenous sedative before the start of the septoplasty procedure. Once you are already comfortable and could not feel a thing, the operation commences with the surgeon making an incision either inside your nose or on its side. The skin and the lining of the nose will then be lifted up so that the cartilage and bone could be exposed. After this, septoplasty removes the portions of bone or cartilage that is the reason for the nasal obstruction.
You have to be aware that the septum itself could not be taken off because it is needed for supporting the nose. Once the obstruction has been taken away, your surgeon will then put back the lining and skin that he has lifted up and then the incision is closed with the use of stitches.
After Septoplasty:
After septoplasty removes the obstruction inside the nasal cavities, you can be guaranteed that you will get relief from the nasal problems that you are suffering from. You will breathe easier and will suffer less sinus infections. Although there is a tendency for the septum to move and take on another shape thus forming another obstruction, this won’t be for a long while yet.
You have to make sure that follow all the proper aftercare instructions so that the results of your operation would be more successful. If you will just do everything that your surgeon tells you, then you might not need to undergo several septoplasty procedures. You would just need one.
