Although there are a large number of successful septoplasty procedures, it could not be helped that there are also those that had dismal results. These failed septoplasty procedures are those that have brought such results as recurrence of the deviation, severe scarring and other complications to the patients who underwent the operation.
How Failures Happen in Septoplasty
A septoplasty procedure is a surgical operation that is performed to correct a deviated septum. This is the wall made of bone and cartilage that separates both sides of the nasal cavities. The procedure is started with the surgeon making an incision on the side of the nose so that the skin and the lining could be lifted up. This is done so the bone and cartilage could be exposed. Once this has been done, the excess bone or cartilage that has caused the nasal obstruction will be cut and removed and splints may be placed to support the remaining structure. The operation is completed with the surgeon placing back the lining and the skin and then stitching up the incision.
There are times when a failed septoplasty procedure starts to go wrong at this part. There are other times when it begins at the point of the removal of the excess bone or cartilage, when not all of the problematic bone or cartilage is taken out. The first could bring on severe scarring, while the second could cause the recurrence of the deviation, thus calling for a revision septoplasty.
Reasons for the Septoplasty Failure
There are a number of reasons on how failed septoplasty procedures came to be. These include:
- Not being able to take care of yourself properly during the healing process, thus possibly causing the movement of the newly corrected septum. This could cause recurrence of the deviation thus making your operation a failed septoplasty surgery. However, you should also be aware that there is a big possibility that after a while your septum would really move around, thus causing nasal obstruction again and would need another surgery.
- Not being able to get an adept and skilled surgeon who could offer the best results after a septoplasty procedure. There are surgeons who are not quite good at doing the procedure probably because of inexperience and lack of training. Because of this, it is very much for a failed septoplasty to happen. Either severe scarring could come after the procedure or there will be little or no relief at all to the patient’s constructed breathing because the obstruction was not taken out completely.
