Septoplasty complications rarely happen, and if it does, they are usually not so serious and can be remedied without difficulty. Septoplasty is the surgical procedure to repair the septum. All types of surgery involve some risks and complications. Infection and bleeding are the common septoplasty complications that the patient should be aware of. There is also a chance of a hole formation or perforation in the septum, but this type of septoplasty complications does not need further treatment unless some discomfort occurs or an infection is observed.
Packing the nose also increases the risk of septoplasty complications, particularly of toxic shock syndrome. The presence of staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria is quite normal, but when they increase in growth which usually occurs in the nose packing, then the human body reacts to it in the form of septoplasty complications. Symptoms that could be connected to infection include high fever, headache, rashes, diarrhea, vomiting, and a low blood pressure.
Managing Septoplasty Risks
Most of the septoplasty complications that could be encountered can be handled easily but one serious but rare complication would be a cerebrospinal fluid leak. Although treatable by some antibiotics, it is still considered an out of the ordinary case and can be more serious if not given early and quick treatment. All the rest of the septoplasty complications such as pain, discoloration, bruising, swelling, and allergic reactions can be avoided if the proper technique is observed by the surgeon and the post operative instructions followed by the patient.
