After Septoplasty:
Septoplasty is an operation done to correct a nasal septum deformity. The part that divides the nasal cavities is the septum, and when there is an abnormality in its alignment caused by excess bone or cartilage or by birth defect, correction must be done. The main purpose of septoplasty is to have a normal nasal breathing, but there are instances when it is performed to allow the examination of the inner part of the nose in treating inflammations, bleeding, polyps, or tumors. There is no other way to treat a deformed septum than to have the surgery, and a significant improvement will be evident after septoplasty.
After Septoplasty Risks:
Similar to other types of surgical procedures, septoplasty is no different when talking about possible risks and complications. A post septoplasty risk that could be encountered by patients is when another surgery is needed because of an unsuccessful operation. If something is wrong with the nasal breathing even after septoplasty, then there is a huge chance that the nasal blockage has not been dealt with or cured. This incident can be a little alarming because the patient has to go through with all the emotions and apprehensions for the second time around.
Other post septoplasty risks that the patient has to be prepared for include the following:
- Buildup of fluid
- Change in skin sensation
- Perforation in the septum wall
- Scarring
- Skin discoloration
- Uneven appearance
Post Septoplasty Advice:
The surgeon does not usually prescribe antibiotics unless the nasal packing is expected to be left in the nose for more than a day after septoplasty. Most patients are not in pain and rarely given pain relievers. One helpful post septoplasty advice that should be taken into consideration by the patient is to apply ice pack or cold compress on the nose for a more comfortable recovery. It is also important to refrain from sneezing and blowing the nose with the mouth open to avoid changes in pressure. The patient is advised to return one week after septoplasty for follow-up examination or if there is a splint or plastic tube that needs to be removed.
A Worry-Free Decision:
Getting back to work or to the patient’s normal day to day activity after septoplasty is not a problem if the operation is successful. Right after septoplasty, the patient is allowed to go home and rest for a few days. In about two weeks, the patient will be able to work again but with some limitations with regards to stressful activities.
